Our New Middle School Is On Its Way
Vos Construction has been appointed to build our new Middle School building which as been designed by Heffernan Button Voss Architects. Construction work will commence on Monday 22 October and it is hoped that the building will be finished by mid June next year.
The development of our Middle School at Founders’ Hall in Molle Street will provide state of the art facilities for 250 students from Years 5 to 8. Middle School has been part of Collegiate’s structure for over a decade and the development of a purpose-built Middle School has been well grounded in curriculum research and consultation with our own staff and architects. The design of the building has also been informed by an examination of local, national and international best-practice examples.
Founders’ Hall Archaeological Dig
A few weeks ago a section of the playground area at Founders’ Hall became the site of an archaeological excavation. Working in conjunction with the Tasmanian Heritage Council we have been investigating the foundations of an old building that previously stood in this area. This is an important part of the preparation of the site prior to the construction of the new Middle School. Some interesting artifacts were discovered during this initial excavation and as a result a more extensive dig was ordered. Under the guidance of archaeologist Mr Parry Kostoglou our students had the opportunity to participate in a real life archaeological dig and actually assist Mr Kostoglou and his team. Footage of the dig was featured on ABC TV news. The numerous artifacts discovered by our junior archaeologists will feature in a special display case which will be part of the new building.
History of the Site
The site of the new building will be on what is considered to be one of the earliest land allotments in Hobart which once housed the building known as Broughton Hall. Broughton Hall was a ’Ladies College’ in the mid 1800s and then a private residence until the 1920s when the Catholic Church acquired the entire allotment and erected a new school on the corner. In 1967 the Department of the Army acquired the property and used the building for the Tasmanian Regiment. In the early 1980s the Army demolished Broughton House but retained the adjacent stables/coach house and former college building. The entire property was subsequently acquired by Collegiate in 1989.
